John Horsburgh (1835-1924) was born in Eddleston, Peeblesshire, the son of a shoemaker. He was apprenticed to a silk mercer in Edinburgh in his youth, but his interest soon turned to photography. By 1863 he had set up his studio in Edinburgh in South Bridge, which moved briefly to 17 Princes Street and finally to 131 Princes Street by 1868.

Note: John Horsburgh was a highly accomplished photographer, engraver and painter. He exhibited in the Photographic Society of Scotland and became a member of the Edinburgh Photographic Society in 1861, the year the Society was established. From his premises at 131 Princes Street, he produced life-sized portraits in oil.
