John Landseer was one of the most important English engravers of his time. In his series of lectures at the Royal Academy, he campaigend for engraving to be recognised as an art in its own right. His largest series of engravings was 'Twenty Views of the South of Scotland' after James Moore. Four of his children went on to become artists.

John Landseer (1761-1852), born in Lincoln, England; now best known as the father of Sir Edwin Landseer, whose paintings he was first to engrave and make widely known. At 24 he had executed some admirable plates. In 1806, he opened a school of engraving, became an associate of the royal academy the year after, and devoted much time to archaeology.

John Landseer (1769-1852) was one of the most important engravers of his time. He campaigned tirelessly for engravers to be awarded full academic status at the Royal Academy. He performed the initial training for his three sons, but then arranged for them to become pupils of the history painter B R Haydon.
