John Loos came from a family of Belgian marine artists working in Antwerp during the second half of the nineteenth century. He was the son of John F. Loos, who flourished from 1859-1867, but unlike his father he painted vessels in a smoother manner, more like his brother Henry, who flourished from 1871 to 1904.
