After serving in the U.S. Army, he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1955 from the University of Iowa with an emphasis in studio art and art history. Maakestad joined the St. Olaf art faculty in 1956, teaching painting, drawing, design, printmaking, sculpture and art history, coordinating college exhibitions and collections and designing sets for the St. Olaf Christmas festival for 20 years through 1977.

Maakestad is a prolific artist and active exhibitor with over 50 shows to his credit since 1993. May 22, 2011 · Maakestad’s first inclusion in a major juried exhibition also occurred shortly after his graduation from Luther. His work was part of the 1981 “Young Minnesota Artists” exhibition at the University of Minnesota, a show for artists 20-30 years of age. That exhibition led to an invitation from the Suzanne Kohn Gallery in St. Paul.
