John Paul Jones, draftsman, painter, printmaker, sculptor, and teacher, was born in Indianola, Iowa on November 18, 1924. He enrolled as a pre-engineering major at Simpson College in Indianola in 1943, but his studies were interrupted by World War II. After serving in the military, he began his art training at the University of Iowa in 1946.

Jones was a greatly admired figurative painter/printmaker and teacher at UCLA (1953-1963) and UC Irvine, from where he retired in 1990 and settled permanently in Ashland, Ore. Born in Iowa, Jones studied art with Mauricio Lasansky at University of Iowa, Iowa City (B.F.A., 1949).
