John Egerton Christmas Piper CH (13 December 1903 – 28 June 1992) was an English painter, printmaker and designer of stained-glass windows and both opera and theatre sets. His work often focused on the British landscape, especially churches and monuments, and included tapestry designs, book jackets, screen-prints, photography, fabrics and ceramics.

With his wife, Myfanwy Piper, he founded the contemporary art journal, Axis. On 28 June 1992 John Piper died at his home at Fawley Bottom, Buckinghamshire where he had lived for most of his life. His children are painters Edward Piper and Sebastian Piper, and his grandchildren include painter Luke Piper and sculptor Henry Piper.

Jun 12, 2019 · John Piper, Harbour Scene, circa 1932. Sold for £52,500. In this early period, Piper used collage with gouache and ink in a deliberately naïve, and often cubist, style with blocks of colour or collage representing seaside cliffs and beaches in tribute to his idols Picasso and Braque. This is something with which Ben Nicholson also experimented, though in a cleaner geometric modernist style.

John Piper worked in the graphics field for many years, having started Contemporary Lithographs in 1936 in co-operation with Robert Wellington and the Curwen and Baynard Press. In 1964, Marlborough published twenty-four original lithographs called "A Retrospective of Churches" which is one of his best known suites of graphics.
