As one of the best known artists in Cornwall at this time, John Piper is neither Cornish, nor drawn to the county by “the light”. He came as a boy when his parents bought a guest house in St Ives. His desire to make his life that of a painter was ignited by the sight of a huge Patrick Heron canvas on a visit to the Penwith Society in the early 60’s.

He was an art teacher in Penzance for twenty years before becoming a full time painter. He lives near Lands End and paints from his studio which overlooks the Penwith Moors. His main influence is the Cornish landscape and his paintings depict the moors, headlands and cliffs and more recently farm buildings and cottages.

John Piper’s work is strongly influenced by the countryside of West Cornwall, and he is well known for his paintings of the moors, carns, headlands and cliffs that characterise this ancient landscape. Looming skies and large expanses of moorland create a dramatic, often stark background to his paintings of cottages and farm buildings.
