John Ritto Penniman apprenticed as an ornamental painter in Roxbury, Massachusetts, at the age of eleven. He set up his own shop when he was twenty-one and settled in Boston, painting clock faces, signs, and furniture. He was friends with the artist Gilbert Stuart, spending time in his studio and even naming his only son after him.Died: Oct 15, 1841

PROVENANCE Affixed to the back of panel is a book plate printed with Penniman family coat of arms which belonged to descendant Grace Allen Penniman (b. 1872 or 74 Worcester, d. 1965 Brookline). Pencil annotations on the book plate read "Artist was John Ritto Penniman and he made the wrong crest of a plow and wheat JRP was a pupil of Gilbert Stuart.
