Nov 06, 2015 · It is with great sadness that we share the news that beloved ceramic sculptor and educator John H. Stephenson died on October 20, 2015. A Fellow of the American Craft Council since 2010, Stephenson influenced generations of students through his teaching and leadership at the University of Michigan, and he was internationally recognized for his pioneering abstract sculptures.

He graduated from Hackensack High School in 1963 and was awarded an athletic scholarship to Hampton Univeristy (Hampton, Virginia) where he majored in art education. While there he was greatly inspired by noted African American ceramic artist Joseph W. Gilliard.
