THE VANDERPOEL ART ASSOCIATION was founded in 1913 by friends of John H. Vanderpoel, as a memorial to this celebrated instructor from Chicago’s School of the Art Institute. Legendary artist Georgia O’Keeffe praised him as “one of the few real teachers I have known.” Due to health concerns, the museum will be closed until further notice.

Vanderpoel exhibited five paintings at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, was a member of several artists' societies, and was elected president of the Chicago Society of Artists. He received a bronze medal at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904 in St. Louis.
