Born in north east England, Jonah Jones (1919–2004) is best known as a Welsh sculptor, writer and artist-craftsman. Following demobilisation as a non-combatant in the British Army, in 1947, Jones began a shared practice with the artist John Petts in North Wales, followed by a short, intensive stay at the workshop of the late Eric Gill, where he learned the techniques of lettering and stone carving.

Jonah Jones was born on Tyneside into a family of miners. A self-taught artist , he came to Wales in 1948. After training as a sculptor and letter-cutter in Eric Gill’s old workshop at Pigotts, he lived at Pentrefelin, in Caernarfonshire, moving in 1966 to a new house he had built overlooking the estuary of the Afon Dwyryd near Portmeirion.
