He studied at the National Academy of Design between 1935 and 1941 with Leon Kroll and held his first solo exhibition in 1947 at the New York Contemporary Arts Gallery.

Joseph Wolins was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 1915. He studied at the National Academy of Design from 1935–41 under Leon Kroll. While studying in Europe in 1937, he was particularly influenced by the Italian painters Piero della Francesca, Mantegna and Giotto. The Paris Exposition of 1937 afforded a unique opportunity to study Modern European Painting.
