Joseph Ryan Woodwell (1843 – 1911) Woodwell, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was exhibiting paintings when he was just 17. His father, recognizing talent, sent him to Paris where he studied under Charles Gleyre, who taught future Impressionist painters Renoir, Sisley, Monet and Pissaro.

Woodwell was active in Pittsburgh's art community. The artist's involvement with the Carnegie Internationals resulted in a portrait of Woodwell by Eakins in 1904. Woodwell also exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1861-1910), at the National Academy of Design (1879 and 1880), and at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition.

May 18, 2020 · Joseph Woodwell was born in Pittsburgh, the son of woodcarver and hardware business owner Joseph W. Woodwell. Encouraged by his family to seek an education in the arts, young Joseph first studied informally with the genre painter David Gilmour Blythe (1815–1865), also of Pittsburgh, and, in 1859 at the age of seventeen, Woodwell left for Europe to attend the Académie Julian in Paris.
