Julian Rossi Ashton was born in London in 1851, the eldest of the five children of Thomas Briggs Ashton and his wife, a Florentine and daughter of an Italian count. He studied in the West London School of Art, London and Academie Julian in Paris around 1873. In 1878 he moved to Australia as illustrator for the Illustrated Australian News.
