Kathleen McEnery (Cunningham), painter of figure, portraits and still lives, was born in 1885 and died in Rochester, New York in 1971, having lived there for the last fifty-seven years of her life. The artist was about twenty-two years old and living in Paris when she painted this bold and modern woman. McEnery lived in New York, Madrid, and Paris before she moved to Rochester, NY in 1914. I included it in a small exhibition I curated at the Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester, in 1995, of images of women, as part of a larger project celebrating the 75 th anniversary of women’s suffrage in the U.S.
