He attended the Tokyo School of Fine Arts where he studied under Fujishima Takeji (1865-1943), the well-known western-style painter, and graduated in 1929. From 1930-34 he attended the Academie Colarossi in Paris. He returned to Japan in 1934 to co-found the Shin-Seisaku Kyokai artists' association.
