Kevin Leeper is a San Francisco Art Institute graduate and part time teacher at Diablo Valley College. He designed and fabricated the gate in 1993 in response to the local residents wish to have a more secure area at night. What this door opens onto is “The Tenderloin National Forest”.

Professor Leeper is an awesome instructor. He is chill & creative & easy to get along with. He's really into animation & he teaches step by step while you're working on your own version. He oft takes breaks during lectures to help each student out 1 on 1. We used Maya on big screen Macs. This class was fun bc there's lots of room for creativity!D

The Tenderloin Children’s Playground is situated directly across the street. In 2000, Lazer and Smith negotiated a lease with the City of San Francisco for $1.00 per year, which permanently closed the alley to traffic. A sculptured gate, commissioned by the luggage store and built and designed by Bay Area artist Kevin Leeper was installed.
