Apply for the John Michael Kohler Arts Center's celebrated Arts/Industry residency program! Up to twelve artists from around the world are chosen each year for three-month residencies that give them access to the Pottery and/or Foundry in the Kohler Co. factory in Kohler, Wisconsin.

The current Connecting Communities project at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center comprises a cohort of artists working together. In this multiyear project, four artists-in-residence work to engage Sheboygan communities in collaborative art making, creative movement, and ongoing conversation.

Kohler Foundation, purchased the site in 1980 and initiated a major restoration using skilled craftspersons from carpenters to artists. For the most part, the murals remain just as they looked in 1899 when Hupeden finished his work. After the restoration was completed, the Foundation presented Sauk County with the deed to The Painted Forest.

In the past, Kohler Foundation’s preservation efforts were focused almost entirely in the state of Wisconsin. However, the Foundation is committed to expanding its preservation efforts nationwide.

Artists-in-residence may work in the Kohler Co. Pottery, Iron and Brass Foundries, and Enamel Shop to develop a wide variety of work in clay, enameled cast iron, and brass including but not limited to murals and reliefs, temporary or permanent site-specific installations, and functional and sculptural forms.
