The Laurens have included the work of outsider artist Bill Traylor (1854–1949) in their collection of folk art. Traylor, a self-taught artist, was born into slavery on an Alabama farm. Unable to read or write and disabled by rheumatism, Traylor began painting in 1939 at 85 years of age. Homeless, he used the sidewalk and doorways as his studio.
