Bernard Leach, in full Bernard Howell Leach, (born January 5, 1887, Hong Kong—died May 6, 1979, St. Ives, Cornwall, England), one of the foremost modern British potters who influenced contemporary ceramic design. The son of a colonial judge, Leach had lived in Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore by 1897. In that year he traveled to England and later (1903–08) studied at the Slade School of Art.
