Curtis was proud to have been chosen as the official artist for the United States Antarctica Expeditions in 1939, 1940 and 1957. He is widely admired for his paintings done on these trips. He also created many fine works in both oil and gouache while hiking through the High Sierras and the Grant Tetons and is best known for his desert and mountain landscape scenes.
