Leo Cotton began his artistic life in San Antonio, attended the Holmes School of Illustration in St. Louis. He spent most of his early career in Texas, but moved to Los Angeles in 1925. He became the art director of the Los Angeles Examiner, while painting landscapes, often of the desert near Palm Springs.
