At the outbreak of war he joined the 137th Field Regiment (Blackpool), Royal Artillery where he became Regimental Artist. In September 1941 he was posted to support the beleaguered garrison at Singapore.

Comic artist - Rawlings worked as a boys comic artist for D.C. Thomson, L. Miller and Sons Ltd, London (and probably other publishers as well). For The Victor and The Hornet comics, he drew many war strips including The Island of No Return, which was set in a World War Two Japanese P.O.W. camp.
