Linvel Barker Linvel Barker left Kentucky as a young man and traveled extensively around the US. From some time in the mid-1950s, he settled in Northern Indiana with his wife, Lillian, also from eastern Kentucky, where he worked for over 30 years as a skilled maintenance technician at a steel mill.

Linvel Barker was a retired metalworker turned folk artist. He didn't start carving until 1984 and he would rough out the shapes on a band saw and his wife would help him finish these. These particular cats were done in 1996 and a very similar cat was featured on the spine of the book “Contemporary American Folk Art – A Collector’s Guide".
