On Lionel Wendt's death, his collection of paintings was bequeathed to the LWMF by his brother Harry (Henry) Wendt. In 1967 the collection was auctioned to raise funds to develop the Centre. A large number of these paintings was purchased by Martin Russel, and Trustees at that time - Harry Pieris and Anton Wickremasinghe.

Lionel George Henricus Wendt (known as Lionel Wendt) (3 December 1900 – 19 December 1944) is a pianist, photographer, filmmaker and critic from Sri Lanka. He was the leader of ‘43 Group, a collective of Sri Lankan artists. The Lionel Wendt Art Centre is a major art centre and theatre in Colombo, Sri Lanka, dedicated to his memory.
