A premier American etcher, Louis Orr is celebrated for his large, detailed works of Paris, etchings he completed as the French Army’s Official Artist from the frontlines of World War I, and domestically, for his extensive series of etchings of North Carolina landmarks. Orr was educated at the Hartford Art School, the Art Student’s League in New York, and the Academie Julian in Paris.

Louis Orr (1876 - 1966) Master etcher and artist Louis Orr was born May 19, 1876 in Hartford, Connecticut and returned there after a brief residency in New Jersey when his father died suddenly in 1892. Orr aspired to secure training and used a $350 scholarship to fund nearly two years of study in Paris. Upon his return, he worked for The Hartford Times and studied at the Art Students League.

Born and educated there, he spent most of his adult life shuttling back and forth between Paris and Hartford. In 1919 he was made a member of the French Legion of Honor.

Louis Orr was born in Hartford, Connecticut on May 19, 1876. Orr’s father, uncle and grandfather were all engravers and printers and, despite their efforts to discourage him from the difficult life of an artist, Orr was inspired to study at the Hartford Art School where he studied with Walter Griffin.
