Little is known about the life and career of Louis Tessier. The records of the Gobelins tapestry manufactory list him as a flower painter, and he was known for his designs in the Neoclassical style. On two occasions he updated the borders of tapestries, eliminating the Rococo ornament and focusing all attention on the central narrative.

Louis Tessier was sometime Peintre du Roi pour les fleurs, and was noted for a series of works he produced almost all of which exclusively deal with or portray flowers. The use of soft-ground etching is particularly suited to more delicate interpretations of nature and reflected the popular use of red chalk as a medium for many artists' studies and independent drawings at the time.
