Apr 28, 1861 · Ludwig Becker (1808?-1861), artist, explorer and naturalist, was born at Darmstadt, Germany, of a notable family. His brothers included a top-ranking soldier and a well-known landscape painter. A third brother was librarian and private secretary to Albert, Prince Consort, and later professor of chemistry at Berlin.

Carl Ludwig Friedrich Becker was born in Berlin in 1820. Between 1837 and 1840 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin and afterwards continued his education as a pupil of the German painter August von Kloeber. In 1843 Becker was awarded with a grant, which enabled him go to Paris in 1843 and to Rome from 1844 until 1847.

Ludwig Becker's 1858 watercolour is the first known illustration of a Common Seadragon from Victorian waters. It was commissioned by Sir Frederick McCoy, Director of the National Museum of Victoria, as part of his zoological research.
