    Amy Beach (1867-1944) was a child prodigy capable of improvising counter-melody by age two. She taught herself to read at age three, and at four, she composed three waltzes for piano during a summer at her grandfather's farm in West Henniker, NH, despite the absence of a piano; instead, she composed the pieces mentally and played them when she returned home.

She received a B.A. in comparative religions from SOAS at the University of London, a graduate fine arts degree in painting from the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, Germany, and an M.F.A. from the Iowa Writers' Workshop, where she was a Maytag Fellow.
