Turning 18, Mahfood moved out to Missouri, to attend the Kansas City Art Institute, where he met fellow cartoonist and illustrator Mike Huddleston, with the two founding 40 Oz. Comics. That publisher was the birthplace of his first self-published work, 1995’s Grrl Scouts — a project he still toys with, when given the chance, to this day.
