Born in a village of Kazanki (Samara Province) into a poor peasant family, Filipp Malyavin started his art training with icon-painting in the Afhos Monastery in Greece at the age of 16. In 1891, a famous sculptor and professor at the Petersburg Academy of Arts, Vladimir Beklemishev, met young Malyavin in Athos and was greatly impressed with his work.
