Mackenzie was born in Scotland and studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1939. Her contemporaries included Ingeborg Neufeld who taught her to carve in wood. In 1946 Mackenzie married a New Zealander by the name of Priest, who was temporarily posted in Glasgow during the war, and emigrated with him in 1951 to Perth, Western Australia.
