Mary de Piro was born in Valletta, Malta in October 1946, the third child in a family of five children. Following her initial schooling in Malta, which included Ballet training, she was educated at the Convent School of the Immaculate Conception at Badia a Ripoli, Florence, where she studied Art as well as attending the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Florence.
