He started his career in Engineering Design but gave this up in 1968 when he and his wife, Audrey, settled in Australia for five years, where Dipnall worked in product design and later taught at a Grammar School. On his return to England in the summer of 1974, Dipnall became a professional artist in response to the demand for his work.
