Mary Temple was born in 1957 in Arizona and received both her B.F.A. and M.F.A. from the University of Arizona. Though trained as a painter, her works, many of which are conceptual installation pieces, blur the boundaries between painting, sculpture, and drawing. Her practice deals with themes such as informational spin, false documents, and verisimilitude.

Mary Temple works seamlessly between painting, sculpture, and drawing as she endeavors to distinguish truth and doubt. She is known for trompe l’oeil installations such as the ongoing site-specific series “Light Installations” (2002-) for which she paints light cast through an imaginary tree onto the gallery’s floor and walls, its frozen image giving the illusion that time has stopped.Nationality: American

Temple classifies herself as a trompe l’oeil painter. When one thinks of this moniker it’s along the lines of still lifes, interiors and other circumscribed portions of the visible universe—more about the oeil more than the trompe—as well as technical virtuosity.Author: Shane Mcadams

Nov 25, 2014 · Temple uses painting to conjure uncertainty; it is a means to interrogating our notion of truth. She is best known for her “Light Installations” series, where she paints the illusion of light in a given space, mimicking the shadows of trees and windowpanes on the walls and floors.
