Landscape painter, Mary Ann Van Alstine Wright was born on December 6, 1848, in Watertown, Wisconsin, growing up there. While studying at Eastern boarding schools, she became an accomplished pianist. Back in Wisconsin, she gradually turned to art, studying locally. In 1868, she was almost fully involved with painting.
