ARTIST STATEMENT In 1987 Brown established his own business doing work with wood: post and beam barns, new house construction, renovations, additions, lots of kitchen cabinetry. Cabinet work led to the construction of a shop which is where he now makes his woodblock prints. Brown’s print-making career owes much to his carpentry years.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1958, Matt Brown grew up in the New Hampshire and Washington, DC. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College in 1981, beginning then his career as a carpenter, builder, and cabinet-maker. Matt started making woodblock prints at his workshop in Lyme, NH in 1993 using the traditional Japanese hanga method.
