Throughout his life, moreover, Ernst had numerous friends, lovers and companions, including the world famous writer Leonora Carrington. It is important to note that Ernst's son, Jimmy Ernst (who was a US citizen, though he was born in Cologne before Max Ernst emigrated to the US having escaped the Gestapo) was also a painter.

Ernst, “Beyond Painting,” in Max Ernst: Beyond Painting, And other Writings by the Artist and his Friends (New York: Wittenborn, Schultz, Inc., 1948), p. 9. Max Ernst (2 April 1891 – 1 April 1976) was a German (naturalised American in 1948 and French in 1958) painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and poet.
He even helped shape the trend of American art during the mid-century, thanks to his brilliant and extraordinary ideas that were unlike those of other artists during his time. Ernst also became friends with Peggy Guggenheim, which inspired him to develop close ties with the abstract expressionists.
