Mengs was born in Bohemia, today’s Czech Republic, but was active throughout Europe. He was a close friend of Winckelmann’s and a fellow exponent of the Neoclassical movement in Rome. He has portrayed Winckelmann holding a Greek edition of Homer’s Iliad, an allusion to his erudition and knowledge of classical poetry.
