Born in the UK, Michael Smith has lived in Québec since 1978. He completed a Master of Fine Arts degree at Concordia University in 1983, remaining to teach part time until 1989. He became full-time instructor in fine arts at Dawson College in 1990 and has been a teacher/advisor for the Graduate Program at Vermont College, USA.

Since 1981 Michael Smith’s paintings have been exhibited across Canada and internationally including, the Appleton Museum, Ocala, Florida, Galerie Damasquine, Brussels, the Saidye Bronfman Centre, Montréal and The Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, Taiwan. His work was also exhibited at the Charles Cowles Gallery, New York.

Michael Smith’s most recent series began following a trip to France where he visited ancient cave sites that he had first seen in the 1970s. Unable to take photographs, Smith created watercolours, and ultimately paintings, that evoke the sublime experience of being underground.
