The origins of the art colony on Monhegan date to the mid-19th century; by 1890, it was firmly established.

Famous artists such as George Bellows, Edward Hopper, Andrew Wyeth, Edward Redfield and former Ausable Forks resident, Rockwell Kent, all painted on Monhegan.
