Born in 1919, Daphne Odjig is one of Canada’s most important artists who led the way in redefining our perceptions of First Nations art from her beginnings in the 1960’s to present day. The only woman in the “Indian Group of Seven”, she pioneered the native art movement with artists Norval Morrisseau, Alex Janvier, Carl Ray and others.

Daphne Odjig (Beavon),born 1928 on the Wikwemikong Reserve, Manitoulin Island,Ontario, Canada. She moved to British Columbia in 1968, but returned to the reserve to teach at the Manitou Artssummer workshops in the early 1970's. In the late 1960's, she founded a Native artists group that included Norval Morrisseau, who has been influential on all the Woodland painters.
