Born James Edward Owens in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1918 (not 1911 as cited in Peter Davies’s ‘A Northern School’), ‘Ned’ Owens attended his local art school in the 1930’s and attained a scholarship to study art at Durham.

Born in Newcastle in 1918, Ned Owens studied art during the 1930s. He established an art gallery, the Midday Studios, holding a Lowry exhibition in 1948. He taught art in the Foundation Department at the Manchester School of Art and worked as a staff artist at the Guardian between 1958 and 1975.
