Artist Statement. Nessie Stonebridge’s art depict wild birds paused in crystalized units of time, their wings, talons and beaks contorted in frozen muscular action. Her brooding charcoal drawings and electric oil paintings capture the intensity of the bare life of animals. The iconography here is certainly loaded.

Stonebridge's visceral, highly charged paintings sometimes fail to hit the mark completely, but the best of her work is very fine indeed. The artist's professed allegiances to Bacon, Abstract Expressionism and even Rubens are clearly traceable in her fleshy, organic mark-making, along with a passing (though almost certainly incidental) resemblance to her better-known peer Katy Moran, who we also feature here.

Stonebridge’s work draws on observations from life, not from art history books. She lives on a bucolic farm in Norfolk, her studio surrounded by fields, water, and avian passers-by. Nature here is torrid and calamitous. Recently, she spotted a swan with its head chopped off; nearby was a dead fox.

Nessie Stonebridge ’s paintings have for many years drawn inspiration from the wild and wind-battered Norfolk coastline. She paints the enormous range of lurid colours in nature, balancing movement and structure. At the heart of her series of swan paintings, is the fury of beaks, encircled by fanlike, semi-abstracted wings.

Oct 09, 2009 · Stonebridge juxtaposes her latest paintings and charcoal drawings in a powerful collision of raw, frictious and dramatically gestural compositions that depict a netherworld where life and death, love and hate; the fight and a primal sexual act engage in battle.

Dec 11, 2014 · April: Nessie Stonebridge, British Birds at Carslaw St*Lukes, London. Nessie Stonebridge’s gestural avian creations are beguiling in lush greens and blues, dare I say it, they’re beautiful. British Birds appears to be a comment on female representations, using a play on the derogatory slang for women, ‘bird’. Hence my trepidation at focussing on the beauty of the paintings.
