Nicola Marschall (German-American, 1829-1917), is best known for his portraits and his design of the Confederate Flag which became known as the "Stars and Bars." A German immigrant, he came to Mobile, Alabama in 1849 to live with a relative, and joined the staff of the Marion Female Seminary, where he taught art as well as music and language to young ladies.
