Alfred R. Nunamaker began painting at the age of 12 and first exhibited at the age of 14 at Phillips Mill. His tutelage began under his father, painter Kenneth Nunamaker, who had brought his family to the New Hope area in 1923. The influence of the New Hope impressionists on Alfred Nunamaker, particularly his father, was strong.

Nunamaker painted primarily landscapes, with a particular interest in winter scenes, and was influenced by Edward Redfield. He was skilled in his use of built-up impasto and carefully blended colors. He exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, the National Academy of Design in New York, and the International Gallery in Venice, Italy.
