Named after his father, an architect by profession, Oskar Laske the younger was expected to follow the same career track. He moved to Vienna at around age 13, and soon thereafter began taking art lessons from Anton Hlavacek, a Hungarian born painter who would be best remembered for his lyrically beautiful turn-of-the-century paintings of Vienna.

Laske, renowned in Austria and frequently exhibited in Germany, Italy and England, remains little known in the U.S. The Galerie St. Etienne mounted his first American one-man show in 1950. The artist died in Vienna in 1951 at the age of 77. He was awarded several honors by the Austrian government during his lifetime and posthumously.
