Pat McGuire was a descendant of the great Charles Gladstone. Pat was born in 1943 in Skidegate in the Queen Charlotte Islands. He began drawing and painting at a young age and learned a great deal about Haida art and culture through his uncle Joe Tulip.

Pat McGuire, born in 1943, was one of five children of a Haida mother and an Ontario-born father of Ojibway and Irish heritage. He is also related to the great carver, Charles Edenshaw. McGuire spent his early years in Skidegate, Queen Charlotte Islands, listening to Haida stories told by his uncle Joe Tulip.
