He exhibited an interest in art at an early age and was apprenticed to a lithographer. Heaslip's other interest was aviation, and when he was old enough, he joined the Royal Flying Corps, serving during World War I. Following the war, Heaslip came to New York City and began formal art studies at the Art Students League.
