Paul Tonkin attended Canterbury Art College 1970 – 1973. Soon after, Paul moved to London and he exhibited in the Annual Stockwell Depot Shows between 1976 and 1979 where he and Robert first met. John Hoyland invited him to exhibit in the 1980 Hayward Gallery Summer Exhibition alongside Albert Irvin, Frank Bowling and others.. By the late 80s he was working at Greenwich Studios in S.E. London.
